YouTube makes it easy to share your own videos or other people’s videos, but when it comes to downloading videos you have to follow YouTube’s rules. In the video below, I explain what rules you need to follow to download videos from YouTube, how to download a video from your own YouTube channel, and how to legally download other people’s YouTube videos. Watch to the end of the video to find out where you can download free music, free images, and free video clips, to use in your videos.
Why would you want to download a video from YouTube?
Perhaps you want to store it on the computer so you can watch it later. Perhaps you’re on a plane and you don’t want to pay for internet access.
Let’s first take a look about downloading videos from YouTube
According to YouTube’s terms of service. Let’s go to YouTube terms of service and look under the section 4C. 4C says, “You agree not to access content through any technology or means other than the video playback pages of the service itself, the embeddable player, or other explicitly authorized means YouTube may designate.“
5B, under Use of Content says, “Content is provided to you as is. You may access content for your information and personal use solely as intended through the provided functionality of the service and as permitted under these terms of service. You shall not download any content unless you see a download or similar link displayed by YouTube on the service for that content. You shall not copy, reproduce, distribute, transmit, broadcast, display, sell, license, or otherwise exploit any content for any other purposes without the prior written consent of YouTube or the respective licenses of the content. YouTube and its licensors reserve all rights not expressly granted in and to the service and the content.“
The bottom line is, you can’t download any video on YouTube that you don’t own and use it for yourself. You have to get written permission from YouTube, or permission from the owners of the content. All content online is copyright protected. That’s why YouTube recently clamped down on duplicate content.

Let me ask you an important question, when do you download videos from YouTube and what do you use them for? Post your answer in the comments below. I’d love to read them, and I’m sure others would too.
How do I get permission to use somebody else’s content in my video?
If you plan to use copyright-protected material in your video, you need to get the owner’s permission. YouTube can’t grant these rights to you. If you want to add background music or sound effects to your video, just use YouTube’s audio library, all the music in there is free to use. If you want to add free video clips to YouTube videos, you go to free stock video footage sites, like Pexels or Stock Footage 4 Free (no attribution required)
Just make sure you check the licenses before downloading the video clips.
If you want to download unlimited royalty-free stock video footage, check out Video Blocks. You don’t have to worry about copyright issues, and you get studio quality video clips. If you want to watch my review of Video Blocks, click here
