Website owners are always on the lookout for ways to improve their rankings in the search engines particularly if they are in a competitive market. The Google +1 button has become available for website owners and publishers to include in their content. Adding it your website can influence your rankings in the Google’s search results.
What does the button do, how does it work and how do you add it to your web pages?
What is Google’s +1 button?
It works in a similar way to Facebook’s “Like” button. When visitors click the +1 button, your website URL appears on the +1 tab on the user’s Google profile. The number of +1 clicks and the person who clicks on your +1 buttons may influence the position of your pages. Google wants visitors to click on the +1 button if they find something of interest or wish to recommend content.
How does it work?
You have to be logged into a Google account for the button to work. With a single click, the +1 button lets signed-in Google users recommend web content they like to their friends and contacts. Within your Google profile you will see all of your +1’s in one place, and can delete those you no longer want to recommend.
According to Google..“Your +1’s are public. They can appear in Google search results, on ads, and sites across the web. You’ll always be able to see your own +1’s in a new tab on your Google Profile, and if you want, you can share this tab with the world.”
How do you add the Google +1 button to your web pages?
It’s very easy to add the Google +1 button to your web pages. The button comes in different sizes and different formats. You simply select the size button you want then add some javascript code to the pages where you want the button located. Read how to add it here
If you have a Blogger blog, you can add the button by going to Design – Page Elements on the dashboard, find the “Blog posts†area, click edit, and select the “Show Share Buttons†options. You will find the +1 button as an option.
So should you add the Google +1 button to your website?
There are many other (more significant) factors that affect your site’s rankings in the search engines. Adding Google’s +1 button won’t have a major impact on the position of your pages in Google’s search results however if you’re in a competitive market it may help you stay ahead of your competitors.
