Google Chrome Web Browser – benefits and uses

There’s a new browser kid on the block put out by Google called Chrome. So why do you need another browser? I suspect it’s not only to compete with Microsoft but to integrate with all the Google other applications. ie One of these is its online office suite which competes with Microsoft’s expensive office software. Like all Google’s applications it is Open Source which means you can study the code and even improve it if you’re a programmer.

Specs of Google Chrome:

* Built for Web applications rather than Web pages.
* Has its own JavaScript engine to power web applications.
* Uses browser tabs that get their own URL box making each tab a browser window.
* No about:blank pages. Chrome defaults to a page featuring the four most used search engines and the user’s nine most visited Web pages.
* Chrome has an “Incognito” mode to erase browser history when the browser is closed.
* Chrome can be “streamlined” so that the toolbar and URL box are hidden and only the web page is shown on the screen.
* Good security. Chrome sandboxes Web pages, preventing drive-by downloads and installations.
* Continuously makes contact with Google to update a list of known malware sites in order to warn the user.
* One box for everything – type in address bar and get suggestions for both search and web pages.
* Thumbnails of your top sites – access your favorite pages instantly from any new tab.
* Shortcuts for your applications – get desktop shortcuts to launch your favorite web applications.
* Available only for Windows for now, Google plans to release versions for Mac and Linux as well.
* Users less memory that competing browsers

How will Chrome affect Webmasters and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

1. Web Site appearance

If chrome gains popularity among internet users web designers will need to optimize their new designs to accommodate this new browser. Microsoft has already come out with Internet Explorer 8 and we now can upgrade to Firefox 3. It may be a good idea to ask your client what browser they are currently using so at least their own site will display correctly.

If you’re a web designer I recommend downloading all 3 main browsers to your computer and testing all new web sites with each of them. So far there are no compatibility problems if you have them all on your desktop.

2. Suggested web sites

If your site ranks for your keywords, Chrome will suggest it in the browser.

3. Free marketing

Google Chrome says if you make your content remarkable, they’ll market it for free to their users directly in the OmniBox.

Conclusion

It will be a while before Google Chrome gains popularity however take it for a spin to test it yourself. It’s another tool that may aid you in designing, optimizing and marketing web sites.

One Way Link Building – Authority Site Benefits

Google determines your search engine rankings by how many links point to your web site. The greater the volume of links the higher your rankings go. Links from authority sites will increase your rankings faster than sites that get little or no traffic.

Benefits of an authority site

1. Receives lots of traffic

Most authority sites have built their traffic over several years with continuous marketing.

2. High page rank(PR)

Google determines the importance of a web page based on the number of links pointing to it. It’s like casting a vote for another page. It’s measured form 0-7 where 0 is the least and 7 the highest. Page rank is not the only factor Google uses to rank pages, however it’s one of the most important ones.

Authority sites generally have a high page rank because of the large number of links pointing to them.

3. High quality content

Content is king on the Internet so if your web site contains content that helps site owners build their business they will want to keep coming back.

4. Fresh content

Search engines love content that is continually updated. This is why blogs rank well. Authority sites are visited often because they have become the “go to” place for new information in their niche.

Tip

Research the top 10 web sites in your niche by checking how many backlinks they have. Enter the web site address of the top site at: http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com. It will show how many inbound links this site has. Do the same for the other 9 sites. then do your own. Now you have a clearer idea how many links you need to point to your site. Keep in mind there are other factors that influence Google rankings ie quality of links, design structure, clean html code and no broken links.

One Way Link Building – Top 7 Benefits

If you want your web site to gain high rankings in the search engines you need lots of links pointing to it from other sites. This is not going to happen by just building a site and uploading it to the Web. The ideal link is a one way link because you don’t have to reciprocate by also placing a link on your own site as in a link exchange.

Benefits of one way link building

1. No need to exchange links

Link exchanges can be frustrating and very time consuming because you need to find the right sites to exchange links with plus the response may be little or nothing. Most site owners delete these requests.

2. Keyword targeting

Internet users enter keywords in the search engines to find information. Targeting your specific keyword in the text of your one way link (known as anchor text) will increase your search engine visibility.

3. Branding

If you want to build brand awareness for your business name use it in the anchor text of your article resource box or when commenting on other blogs and forums.

4. Gain authority status

As you receive more backlinks, you attract more visitors. Over time your site will become known as the “go to” site for information on your topic. If your site appears on the first page of the search engine results’ pages, people will find it naturally when searching on your targeted keyword or business name.

5. Increase search engine rankings

Your site’s rankings increase in proportion to the number of links pointing to it. The more links you receive from other sites, the higher your rankings.

6. Boost web traffic

The number of visitors will increase because you are getting traffic from a variety of web site links. For example, if you get a one way link from a high traffic site some of their visitors will be redirected to your site. If your article gets posted on a popular site or ezine you may receive a sudden flood of visitors. If it remains there you’ll receive an ongoing source of traffic.

7. Receive return visitors

Visitors keep returning to your web site when there is new information that helps their business. Building lots of one way links will attract them to your site. If you want to keep them there, provide evergreen content. If it’s high quality content they will want to share it with other business owners.

Deep Links – 7 Effective Deep Linking Strategies to Increase Web Traffic

Deep Linking boosts your web site traffic by helping search engines spider the content on other pages besides your home page. This gives your site greater authority because you have related links pointing to these internal pages.

7 Effective Strategies to Build Deep Links

1. Deep links should only be 3 clicks away from the home page.

Search engines don’t spider web sites deeply so make sure visitors can access all pages within 3 clicks
from the home page. Visitors also don’t want to search throughout your site to find relevant information.

2. Create a site map page

The site map should contain all the links of your web site. Place the site map link on the home page and all other pages. This allows visitors to navigate your whole site from one page. Search engines spidering your home page will also spider all the links on the site map page.

3. Create a Google Site Map

This is an XML site map which is different to the html site map mentioned above. According to Google “Sitemaps provide additional information about your site to Google, complementing our normal methods of crawling the web. We expect they will help us crawl more of your site and in a more timely fashion, but we can’t guarantee that URLs from your Sitemap will be added to the Google index.”

The XML site map can include links, anchor information, page priority and how often your site changes. Click here to read more about Google Site Maps

4. Get relevant links from other web sites

If you find a information relevant to a specific page on your web site ask the site owner if they can link to that page. The best way to do this is to offer something of value in return. It may be a link from your own site, an article you’ve written or you can even offer to pay them for a link from their site to yours.

5. Write articles that target specific web pages

Write an article that focuses on the content of one of your web pages. Use the main keywords in your article title, content and the anchor text in your resource box. Submit your content to the top article directories. If many people publish the article you will receive many links pointing back to your web page. The more articles you generate the more links you’ll acquire.

6. Internal linking

When creating a new web page or blog post link to other pages that have related content. This will strengthen the authority of the page you are linking to and help it attain higher rankings.

7. Use the no follow tag to control deep links

You don’t need search engines to index irrelevant web pages such as your contact or privacy policy pages. It dilutes the authority of your web site. You only want Google to index pages that matter.

To stop Google from indexing irrelevant pages insert the no follow tag like this:

<a href=”http://domain.com/contact.html” rel=”nofollow”>anchor</a>

This will maximize the flow of link juice to your most important pages and minimizes (or eliminates) the flow of link juice to your least important pages. For more information read “Sculpting Your PageRank For Maximum SEO Impact

Conclusion

Increasing the number and quality of links pointing to your internal pages will make it easier for search engines to spider your web site. This boosts web traffic and get visitors to stay longer on your site because of its in-depth content.

Deep Links – How Deep Linking Will Increase Traffic to Your Web Site

Most site owners try to get links pointing to just their home page. This is a big mistake because you miss out on attracting traffic to other pages of your web site. Also your incoming links may not be directing visitors to the targeted content they are looking for because it is on your internal pages. This is why you need to cultivate deep links.

What are deep links?

Theses are links that point directly to a specific page of your website instead of just pointing you to the home page.

Benefits of Deep Links

1. Deep linking help visitors navigate to the exact location of the item or service they are searching for.

Online visitors want to find the most relevant information as quickly as possible. They don’t want to spend time searching all over the Net. By providing the most targeted information possible you will attract and retain those visitors thus generating more traffic to your site.

2. Increase search engine rankings

A site that contains deep links to other pages will gain high rankings because it has more depth than web sites that just have links pointing to the home page. Make sure your site has a mix of home page and internal page links.

3. Target multiple keywords

Stuffing all the main keywords in your home page will dilute its effectiveness. It’s better to create a page of content that only includes one or 2 keywords or keyword phrases. The content you create should be all about the topic of that particular keyword. This increases the opportunity of that page to rank well for that keyword.

4. Encourages natural linking

If Google sees 1000 links to your homepage and just a few links to the rest of your site they’ll perceive you haven’t participated in natural linking strategies. Natural linking is where other sites naturally link to the content within your web site. Natural links generate deep links.

5. Builds page rank

Page rank measures how many links point to a website, and also the quality of the sites providing the links. If you have the Google tool bar installed on your browser it will display a little green bar. A page rank of 5 (PR5) means that your site has a good number of links pointing to it.

Only building links to the home page will boost your home page PR and pass on some of the PR to your internal pages if they link to it. A better strategy is to increase the PR of your internal pages with deep links.

Keep in mind Google no longer provides an accurate reflection of PR, therefore only use it as an indicator of your site’s page rank.

6. Attract visitors to deeper pages

A large web site often contains pages in directories that are several levels away from the home page. This makes it difficult for search engines to index those pages. Search engines generally visit pages that are only a few links away from the home page.

By getting other web sites to link to these deeper pages you increase the PR of those pages and attract more overall traffic to your web site.

7. Give authority to internal pages

Your internal pages can carry as much weight (authority) as your home page if you build links to these pages based on specific keywords. They will also rank higher than your home page if you have built your content around that keyword phrase. This will increase the number of pages the search engines will index form your website.

Conclusion

I highly recommend creating deep links as part of your overall web site marketing strategy instead of just getting links to your home page. You will increase the number of visitors to all parts of your site and boost the authoritativeness of its content.

Get More Backlinks by Writing Articles

The number and quality of links pointing to your site is one of the major factors that influence the position of your web site in the search engines. Ideally you want to be on the first page for your main keyword phrase to receive the most traffic.

This may almost be impossible if it’s a very competitive phrase ie your competitors have 500 backlinks pointing to their site and you only have 50.

Here’s how to find out how many backlinks your competitors have:

1. Enter your main keyword phrase in the Google search box and make a note of the top 10 web sites.

2. Do a backlink check for each of these web sites by entering site:www.domain.com in the Yahoo search box.

3. Click the link “only this domain”

4. Repeat this procedure for your own site to see how many backlinks your site has.

5. Repeat this procedure for your other main phrases to see which phrase is the least competitive.

6. Select the phrase that is the least competitive ie if you have 50 backlinks for one of your phrases and your competitor has 75 you only need to get another 26 to out rank him (providing they are quality links).

7. Generate lots of backlinks to your web site by writing articles that include your keyword phrase in the content and live links pointing back to your site in the resource box at the end of the article.

8. Submit your articles to the top article directories.

9. Write and submit 3 articles/week over 2 months..more if you have time, less if you don’t. The most important aspect of this exercise is to do it consistently.

10. Monitor your results by checking your rankings and site stats. Some article directories provide stats on how many people read your articles.

You’ll get more backlinks as you increase the volume of articles you produce.

Blog Customization – Move Date Under Post Headings

Recently a customer asked if I could do some customization on his Word Press blog. based on the downtown-java-3column theme. (I had customized the design for him earlier).
His current theme placed the date and filed under category under each post. He wanted these 2 variables placed under the post headings.

Here’s what I did:

1. Created backup copies of the theme files.

2. Edited the php in the theme files below by searching for something similar to OR

index.php
home.php
archives.php

3. I moved the div class containing the time and category underneath the title (H1) tags.

4. Here is the original php code:

<div id="contentleft">

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
<h1><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h1>

<?php the_content(__('Read more'));?><div style="clear:both;"></div>

<div class="postmeta">
<p><?php the_time('F j, Y'); ?> | Filed Under <?php the_category(', ') ?> <?php edit_post_link('(Edit)', '', ''); ?></p>
</div>

<!--
<?php trackback_rdf(); ?>
-->

<?php endwhile; else: ?>

<p><?php _e('Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.'); ?></p><?php endif; ?>
<p><?php posts_nav_link(' — ', __('« Previous Page'), __('Next Page »')); ?></p>

</div>

Here is the edited php code:

<div id="contentleft">

<?php if (have_posts()) : while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
<h1><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h1>
<div class="postmeta">
<p><?php the_time('F j, Y'); ?> | Filed Under <?php the_category(', ') ?> <?php edit_post_link('(Edit)', '', ''); ?></p>
</div>
<?php the_content(__('Read more'));?><div style="clear:both;"></div>

<!--
<?php trackback_rdf(); ?>
-->

<?php endwhile; else: ?>

<p><?php _e('Sorry, no posts matched your criteria.'); ?></p><?php endif; ?>
<p><?php posts_nav_link(' — ', __('« Previous Page'), __('Next Page »')); ?></p>

</div>

5. Upload the all edited theme files to the server.

6. View the edited theme to verify the changes have been implemented correctly.

7. Tips

When modifying or moving php code always:
-Make a backup of the original files in case you mess up.
-Check all theme files in case the php code occurs in more than 1 file.
-Check all edited files have been uploaded correctly.
-Test the modified theme so it now displays the date and category under the post headings.

Getting Links From .Edu Web Sites

Getting links from high traffic web sites is one of the best ways to drive traffic to your web site. Some of the most trafficked sites on the Net include .edu and .gov sites because they contain lots of content focused on a particular subject or issue and they often rank at the top of the search engine results.

The problem is that it’s not easy to get links from these sites.

How to get links from .edu web sites?

1. Fill a void

Read the content contained within the .edu site and see if you can add to it or offer something new..perhaps from another viewpoint.

For example I once wrote an article on web design that was picked up by several educational sites looking for a concise tutorial.

2. Create quality content

Create a series of articles that have been carefully written and researched and offer them to the owner of the .edu web site. If the content is good they might link to the articles on your web site or have them added to their own site with your link at the end of the article.

3. Analyze competing web sites

Analyze the .edu links of competing web sites to see what they are linking to. This may be an indication that you could contact these particular .edu sites and offer them good content they can link to. This will save you a lot of time looking through 100s of other .edu sites.

4. Contact student web sites or blogs linked to an .edu web site

There may be students that have active blogs which link to the main .edu site. If you are an authority in your field they may be interested in having you write a post or article for their blog.

Conclusion

By getting incoming links from .edu sites you can boost your search engine rankings because they often have 1000s of incoming links from numerous resources.

Increase Link Popularity – 7 ways to improve link structure

Web designers often focus on the aesthetics of a web site without creating a link structure that will increase link popularity and get more visitors. When the site owner contacts an SEO specialist to market his site to the search engines, the specialist may have to optimize the link structure-a task the designer should have included in the original design.

How does the link structure of your website effect your rankings?

The internal link structure of your site allows you to spread the link power of your home page to the individual pages of your site.

For example, if 1000 other websites link to your home page, then your home page has a certain link power that can be spread to the other pages of your site. If you link to 50 pages on your home page then each page will get 1/50 of the link power. If you link to only 10 pages, then each page will get much more link power passed to it (1/10).

The more link power a page receives, the more likely it is that the page will get high rankings on search engines. Your internal link structure allows you to direct search engines to your most important pages.

How to improve the internal link structure of your website

There are several things that you can do to improve the rankings of special pages on your website:

1) Make sure that the most important pages on your site can be reached with as few clicks as possible from your home page. The fewer clicks you need to get to a web page, the more important it looks to search engines.

2) Link to the pages for which you want to have high rankings from all pages of your website that are related to that page. The easiest way to get related links to a web page is to link from your own website.

3) Use your targeted keywords in the links to these pages. Make sure that you use keywords that are highly relevant and targeted.

Show search engines for which keywords your web pages are relevant.

4) Make the links on your website absolute. Do not link to mypage.htm but to www.yoursite.com/mypage.htm. If other people scrape your web page contents, you’ll get backlinks from these sites.

5) Add a nofollow attribute to all links that aren’t important for your search engine rankings. For example, your privacy policy page or the web page with your terms and conditions probably needn’t be listed in search engines.

The fewer links you have on a page, the more important is the single link to the other pages on your site. If possible, remove unnecessary links from your web pages.

6) Use your robots.txt file or the robots meta tag to exclude duplicate or irrelevant pages from indexing. This is very similar to tip 5. If search engines don’t have to parse your unimportant pages they can take a close look at the pages for which you want to be ranked.

7) Check your website for 404 not found errors and redirect these old links to the most appropriate pages. You might want to use the link checker that you can access in the new IBP 10 beta.

By optimizing the structure of how your web pages pass their link power, you can influence how search engines treat the content of your website.

Once you have optimized the link structure of your website, you should try to get more links from other websites.

It’s hard to beat a website with a great internal and external link structure.
