Self hosted autoresponder
This refers to a script installed on your own server. Once you’ve purchased the script you’ll need to configure and upload it to your server. Many companies offer free installation if you are unable to do it yourself. The benefit of this type of service is that you only pay a one-time fee.
Here are the one-time costs of two self hosted autoresponder services:
autoresponseplus – $197.00
phpautoresponder – $47.95
Make sure you aware of the disadvantages. Check with your web hosting provider if there is a limit to the amount of e-mails you can send each day. Some hosts only allow you to send 1000 e-mails per day. If you have a list of 4000 e-mails you will have to send them over 4 days. Another disadvantage is you may have to deal with spam complaints. For example, if a member on your e-mail list complains to an Internet service provider (ISP) you’re spamming them (even though you received permission), the ISP may block your IP address. This means you may longer be able to e-mail the list from your computer and you have to spend time to track down the ISP that penalized you.
Web-based autoresponder
This is the most popular type of autoresponder used by most marketers. The e-mail marketing software resides on their own server and is managed by a team of dedicated professionals so don’t have to worry about deliverability rates or spam complaints from ISPs. This leaves you free to work on your business.

Is there a web-based autoresponder service that costs less?
Yes!
YMLP (yourmailingserviceprovider)
This is primarily an e-mail service provider however it also includes autoresponders. It offers most of the main features that are included with the autoresponder services mentioned above ie
- 99.5% deliverability rate
- unlimited auto responders
- open rate statistics
- HTML templates
- social media integration
- archive newsletters
- fast technical support
- import current list without resubscribing
Monthly Prices
$3.75 for 0-500 subscribers
$7.50 for 501-2,500 subscribers
$15 for 2,501-7,500 subscribers
$22.50 for 7,501-12,500 subscribers
$30.00 for 12,501-20,000 subscribers
They offer a free trial account so you can test all of YMLPs’ features. If you want to save money then prepay for 6 months to get 5% off or 12 months to get 10% off.
You only pay for the amount of e-mails you send, so you can store an unlimited amount of e-mails in their database without paying extra. If you have need to send email messages to a large list of 4000 subscribers every couple of days consider using one of the other web-based services mentioned. They don’t charge extra for the amount of e-mails you send from the same list. They only charge for the amount of subscribers stored in their online database so the larger your list the more you pay.
My recommendation
If you’re just starting out, don’t have a large list or have a large list but don’t need to e-mail them every few days consider using YMLP. They’re inexpensive, extremely easy to use and very reliable. If you already have a list you need to import, you don’t have to ask subscribers to resubscribe (unlike other web-based autoresponder services).
If you have a large list you need to e-mail every few days consider using Aweber or one of the other web-based autoresponder services mentioned. You can send an unlimited amount of e-mails from the same list without paying additional monthly fees.
