7. it’s vs. its

Incorrect: Its going to rain today.
Correct. It’s going to rain today.
8. lay vs. lie
Incorrect: I got sick and had to lay down.
Correct: I got sick and had to lie down.
Incorrect: He lie down to go to sleep
Correct: He lay down to go to sleep.
9. then vs. than
Incorrect: The house looks older then it appears.
Correct: The house looks older than it appears.
Incorrect: She came home than went to bed.
Correct: She came home then went to bed.
Note: If you begin a sentence with if, don’t use then.
Incorrect: If you can’t open the camera, then you’ll need to ask Dad.
Correct: If you can’t open the camera, you’ll need to ask Dad.
10. brought vs. bought
Incorrect: I brought 2 loaves of bread for $3.00
Correct: I bought 2 loaves of bread for $3.00
Incorrect: I bought the television back to the store for repairs.
Correct: I brought the television back to the store for repairs.
11. insure vs. ensure
Incorrect: I need to ensure my car in case I have an accident.
Correct: I need to insure my car in case I have an accident.
Incorrect: Listening in class will insure you get good grades
Correct: Listening in class will ensure you get good grades.
12. Different than vs. different from
Incorrect: This kitchen color is different than the living room.
Correct: This kitchen color is different from the living room.
Incorrect: This road is different than the other one.
Incorrect: This road is different from the other one.
