Every day I receive emails offering services which guarantee top rankings for my website in the search engines. This can be achieved very easily if it’s a keyword phrase no one is searching on or has no competition. For instance if you do a search on “tuatara schizophrenia” with quotation marks you don’t get any results. If I created a website on this topic it would immediately attain a top ranking however you wouldn’t get any visitors because there are no competing sites . When doing keyword research you need to find keywords relevant to your niche to attract search engine traffic. Irrelevant keywords can be costly.
What is a profitable keyword?
A profitable keyword is one which generates income. Not all keywords are equal. People searching the Net have multiple purposes. For example they may be writing a research paper or just want to find information they can pass on to their friends. There’s no point creating a product around a keyword if you can already find the information for free on Google. (The only exception would be to create an informational website that contains adsense ads so you earn a few cents when someone clicks on the ad). Your keywords should have commercial value.
How to research profitable keywords
One of the best ways to see if a keyword has commercial value is to view the number of Google Ads on the right side of the search engine results’ pages. If it’s full of ads then you know advertisers are paying every time someone clicks on their ad. For instance, if I enter “website design” in Google’s keyword research tool (using exact match type) it shows the average cost per click (CPC) is $4.98. This means an advertiser is paying $4.98 or more to get their ad displayed on the first page of Google using Google Adwords. If I do a search of this phrase it displays 8 Google Ads down the right side of the page.

Use the method above to research profitable keywords before you begin creating a product. Many people invest a lot of time and money developing their product based on an idea they thought people would love only to find out later there was no demand for it. That’s a very costly mistake.
Do market research
Spend time visiting properties on the Net where your target market hangs out. Go to forums, blogs, facebook, twitter and interact with potential customers to find out their fears, frustrations and desires. Some forums even allow you to poll their members. Communicating with people in your market provides insights into what they’re thinking so you can create products which address their needs.
Conclusion
Before diving into a specific niche or creating a new product make sure you research keywords which have commercial value then follow up by interacting with people in your market. The investment you make beforehand generates long term benefits.
